How to Backup Your Photos Using Windows Vista

Computer DVD
What you need

Your computer with a CD/DVD burner
CD-R or DVD+/-R media
A permanent felt-tip marker

Before you begin

Make sure all of your photos are stored in the “Pictures” folder on your computer. You may want to organize them into subfolders by year or person.
 Instructions
  1. Determine how many CD’s or DVD’s you will need.
    • Choose "Pictures" from the programs menu
    • Highlight the folders by holding down the Shift key and selecting the folders
    • Click "Organize"
    • Then "Properties" to few the total size of all selected files.
    • The size of the folders will determine how many CD’s or DVD’s you need to back up your photos.
        • Standard CD-R discs hold 700 MB of data
        • Standard DVD-R discs hold 4.7 GB of data

Most likely, you will only need one DVD; (since they hold about 1900 photos each). If your file is too large, you will have to select sub-folders and burn multiple discs.

  2. Burn the disc
    • Click "Burn" at the top of the window
    • Insert a blank disc (CD or DVD depending on the folders/files size) into the drive
    • Name the disc and click "Next"
    • Drag and drop the folders/files into the drive window. The files will be burned automatically onto the disc
    • "X" out of the drive window

  3. Put the disc back in the drive or take it to another computer and verify the files on the disc.
  4. Label the disc.
  5. Place the disc in a jewel case or video box and store it in a safe place.
  6. Put a monthly reminder on your calendar to perform regular backups.
