Simple Guidelines for Care and Handling of External Hard Drives

Do

  • Keep cables neatly tucked away to avoid entanglement.
  • Store the drive away from direct sunlight, extreme heat and humidity.
  • Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the drive casing.
  • Use surge protectors where applicable.
  • Transport drives in protective cases.

Don’t

  • Restrict the air circulation around the drive.
  • Shake, bump, or drop your hard drive, especially during operation.
  • Disconnect or power down the drive while data is being written.
  • Open the drive casing.
  • Get the drive wet.
